| Dear family, special friends and guests, Plan your winter escape It's that time of year when most of you are planning your escape from cold, dreary winter weather to warmer tropical climates like peaceful Yucatan, with its' rich Mayan culture. Here's an update on news from the Yucatan Peninsula and the Land of the Mayans. Please feel free to forward our website to your family, friends and contacts.
New sights and activities New to the region, located along the PUUC route, is a fascinating Chocolate Eco-Museum, one of only four in the world! The museum is perfectly located near Flycatcher Inn B&B Boutique Hotel. Here, your hosts take you through all stages of producing chocolate, from growing cacao beans right through to handing you a cup of chocolate, and describing it's significance and importance to the Mayan world. This site is well worth adding to your itinerary. For other new and interesting sightseeing ideas, such as touring a rare grand Hacienda with Green Gold (heneken) production still in progress today, see the various attractions described in detail on our Flycatcher Inn website Activities & Itineraries page. For those of you interested in fine arts and culture, we recommend several artists in particular for you to visit their workshops and see them creating their special pieces. Four of the best authentic Mayan ceramists on the Yucatan Peninsula work quite near to Flycatcher Inn and all do very fine reproduction pieces of the old Mayan pottery, using meticulously sourced supplies such as specific clays and pigments in the old tradition. In addition there is a fine local woodcarver, Miguel, who is also the owner of a nearby ethnic restaurant. Another wonderfully talented local artist, Pedro, will carve beautiful designs in native vegetable gourds for you. Pedro's place is situated on a hilltop with a sweeping panoramic view over the entire countryside. Definitely worth a visit. Renovations and enhanced services Flycatcher Inn Boutique Hotel is well and looking better than ever. Click here for photos. We have spent much time this past year renovating and redecorating with Mayan art and style. Upon arrival you are greeted with a complimentary cold refreshing juice or iced tea drink, and as always we provide complimentary purified water in your room, with unlimited refills. We have also enhanced our homemade healthy breakfast menu, which is complimentary with your stay. It includes fresh local fruit (often fresh picked from the trees on our property), juice (also sometimes fresh from our own trees such as the citrus-like tamarind), our own daily ground blend of gourmet organic coffee from nearby Chiapas, whole grain toast, real butter, jams, local Yucatan honey, and a choice of four different egg dishes. Guests are really enjoying our newly remodelled terrace to relax with drinks and snacks in the afternoon. Swing in a hammock and laze away the siesta hours! You will probably get lucky and see small animals called Agoutis as they play in the gardens looking for fallen fruit from our trees. Here you will also see many of our native birds, the stunning yellow and black Flycatchers that are our namesake being just a few of them. Breakfast is also served on our newly redesigned terrace, or if you prefer you may still dine indoors. This year's renovations included significantly enhancing the lower gardens, making a beautiful secluded setting for guests in the cottages and rooms there. Many of the more exotic tropical plants we have collected during our travels around the area are now flowering. The Heliconias in particular are stunning, both the erect and the hanging species; the erect ones looking like small banana trees to which they are related. Their colourful flower pods start about two feet up the stalk, where several stems form a fan design alternately branching left and right, each looking much like a parrot's beak. Truly unusual. These large dramatic flowers bloom for a month or more, as do the lovely lush Red Ginger flowers. One of our most intriguing plants is Ginger Shampoo, having a tall vibrant flower that resembles a bright yellow artichoke, with small bird beak shapes peeking out of each section of the pod. The whole pod turns red at the end of it's blooming cycle. You can see good photographs of our Ginger Shampoo on the Photo Gallery page of our website, along with another pretty flower called Violetta. We are anxiously awaiting blooms on both the Bird of Paradise and The Emperor's Bastón! Such very unusual names!
